Artificial Intelligence (AI)

This guide provides an introduction to artificial intelligence (AI), with a focus on generative AI.

What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions. The term may also be applied to any machine that exhibits traits associated with a human mind such as learning and problem-solving.

Artificial intelligence technology is apparent in computers that play chess, self-driving cars, and banking systems to detect fraudulent activity. Artificial intelligence is used across all industries and academic subjects.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI)

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is a sub-type of AI where new content is created or generated. This content can take the form of text, images, audio, video, code and more.

What is the difference between AI and generative AI?

Generative AI focuses on creating new content, while traditional AI focuses on analysing and interpreting data. Generative AI use cases tend to be in music, design, and marketing, while traditional AI use cases are found in finance, healthcare, and manufacturing
