Introduction to your library

This guide provides information about NMU Library resources and facilities

Accessing and Borrowing

Membership 

  • All registered students are entitled to a free membership to the Nelson Mandela University
  • Membership is not transferable from one year to the next
  • Nelson Mandela University libraries adhere to the No card No service rule

Borrowing

  • Users must present their own current and valid user membership card for all library transactions
  • Users are not permitted to borrow items for other users

Renewals

Books

Users may renew library material  

  • by phone
  • online via the Classic Catalogue 
  • in person at the Circulation Desk 

Certain library material may be renewed twice unless another user has requested the item 

Overdue / Lost charges

Users are responsible for the return of library material on or before the due/recall date.

There is a fine charged on all overdue/lost library materials.

Lost library material

Real replacement value of an item + R100.00 billing  fee (not refundable)

 

Overdue charges

The overdue charge will change to a billing fee of R100 per book once the book is more than 30 days overdue.

Lost charges

Damage to or loss of library material will result in the user receiving an account for the replacement value of the material plus an administration fee of R100.00 per lost item.

There will be no refund on Study Collection items once debited to a library user's account.

Lost cards

Report lost cards to the Customer Relations Librarian or Branch Librarian immediately.
