Metadata is information that describes, explains, locates, or otherwise makes it easier to retrieve, use, or manage an information resource. Metadata is often called "data about data" or "information about information".

 

How can I document or record metadata?

There are many different types of documentation that can be created to accompany research data and the type(s) that you choose are dependent on your research content.

Examples of metadata types:

  • File Naming Schema
  • Readme File
  • Data Dictionary / Codebook
  • Laboratory or Research Notebooks
  • Standard Operating Procedures
  • Protocols
