Referencing

This LibGuide was designed to provide you with assistance in referencing your sources when writing an academic paper.

In-text reference

In-text references (citations):

  • are inserted in the body of your text and indicate that you are talking about, referring to or paraphrasing someone else’s work.
  • are also required when you directly quote another person’s original words.
  • provide enough information for your readers to find the full reference in your reference list.

Author-date style

In author-date style, an in-text reference consists of the author's name, the publication year, and (if relevant) a page number. Each citation must correspond to an entry in the reference list at the end of your paper, where you give full details of the source.

There are however some numeric referencing styles which use footnotes.

The reference style you are going to use will determine the format of your in-text references.
