Referencing

This LibGuide was designed to provide you with assistance in referencing your sources when writing an academic paper.

Reference list

Bibliography or reference list

The terms ‘Bibliography’ and ‘Reference List’ are often used interchangeably, however:

  • a reference list only includes items you have referenced in your assignment whereas,
  • bibliography also includes items used to prepare your assignment (check with your lecturer or tutor which they require).

A reference list:

  • is a complete list of references related to the sources you have used in your work
  • contains detailed references for every in-text reference that you have included within your work
  • provides full details of the source, written in the format required for the referencing style you are using
  • would typically be included at the end of your work

An important principle in referencing is to be consistent.
